I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Maybe internal electrical device heating up and failing. Make sure you check for pin that may need to be punched out, some models have these and some dont but I think the 1990 does. I have to go up a big hill to get home. Once the transmission is out the slave cylinder which most of the time comes with a new throw out bearing will be easy to replace. I hope that helps you out. It is located on either side of the transmission depending on the model, Im not sure which side your perticular model be on but it looks like a spark advance.
People told me 100's of things that were going wrong. Also was making that whining noise, similiar to the fuel pump but from the transmission. However there was about a half a cup of black sludge that had accumulated in the bottom of the pan, and the filter looked clogged. This transmission unit includes a transmission case, valve body, tail shaft and housing, torque converter automatic only , and all internal lubricated parts. Let sit for at least 10 minutes and transmission will run for a few feet and totally quit, making noise as described. This transmission unit has been inspected, tested and ready to ship.

Assemble in reverse order, fill tranny with appropriate lubricant. Use a jack to raise tranny off of the cross member and remove cross memberremove tranny. Good luck and keep me posted. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. Tried again in the afternoon, and was left stranded at the traffic light. Don't know if problem is coincidental or something I did. The wires plug in to the top just pull straight up and it should come out. I have to get another filter, the one I picked up was not exactly correct. I took the truck for a test drive in the morning and everything ok for about 10 miles. So I don't know if this had anything to do or it was just sludge blocking the filter.
This is a long shot remove the transmission pan make sure the trans filter did not pop out. The cheaper way to change the transmission fluid is to have a transmission shop flush it out with a transmission flush system that connects to the high pressure side transmission line and it replaces the old oil with new one and check the transmission line pressure too. You need to remove the shifter, 4 bolts and it slides up and off the transmission. Find large hex-head bolt on drivers side in the side near middle of transmission. Claims on engine warranties are limited to manufacturer defects in the pistons, heads, block, crankshafts, rockers, and oil pumps.
Now I can hear a noise like a dole valve, transmission engages then neutrals out. It would be real easy to find near transaxle flange with finger. Battery was down removed battery, charged, hooked back up. Also look at replacement axle to see if one is included and hole exists. The transmission must come out and then you can access the slave cylinder which will be held on by a couple bolts. Buy a recycled 1990 Ford F-150 Pickup transmission and save thousands of dollars. The original auto part must be returned using the provided shipping label. I have a 1993 Nissan D21 pickup. However in the process I found that the connector to the device that mounts on the transmisson near the shifter and connects to the computer was missing the lock down tabs and was somewhat loose. There is no magnet in the pan, but I did not see any signs of metal whatsoever. I have cleaned everything and watched videos on how to do a proper fluid and filter change. I cant remember if it is on the drivers side or passengers side. No problems with transmission at all until I changed out the engine oil sending unit.
